Small world!

Recently, I learned about the "six degree of separation", and I thought it was very interesting and I wanted to share with you all :)

Six degree of separation concept got me thinking of how small the world really is...

Six degree of separation is referred to an idea that everyone is at most 6 steps away from any other person on Earth. To test this they performed an experiment called "small-world-method" by Milgram. They asked several thousand people in Nebraska to send letter to a stranger in Boston VIA someone they know, and on average, it took 6 people to get the letter to its destination. When I learned about this concept, I was very surprised to find out that the world is really connected and it only takes at most 6 steps.

How about doing the same thing except this time using social networking tools like face book, and twitter?
Due to technologies and many social networking sites, we are able to keep in touch, get in contact, or make new relationships so much faster and easier. If we were to do the same experiment done by Milgram, we would not have to send letters to someone we know who lives in a different country. In fact, we can just contact them or see if we know someone who lives out side of United States by using the search box on face book. It's that much easier....

A lot of time when I use face book, I am surprised by how many mutual friends I have with the person, it's like "I never knew that person knew my friend"; kind of thing.

I believe in the future the world will or might be even smaller due to emerging technologies and social networking sites.
Isn't that freaky? What a small world.

  1. It's a great question -- whether or not social media tools will make this average degrees of separation smaller. I think someone will do this research soon....great question to pose. I enjoyed our choice of imagery. As you move to next postings, think about adding some active/hot links within the text to direct readers to more information. Look at some of your favorite bloggers for some new ideas to learn. Nice job!
